| Michael Slade is the owner and operator of Tawàyama Safaris. Having been a commercial photographer for the past 12 years, he has decided to merge several of his talents and skills. What results is a unique combination of services not found anywhere else in the industry. Tawàyama Safaris is modeled after the traditional safaris found in Africa. Traveling as a self-contained unit, riding in custom outfitted Range Rovers and a hand-built Land Rover equipment vehicle towing a custom cooking trailer, Tawàyama Safaris is a go-anywhere, camp-anywhere affair. You will be driven by our specially trained staff in Range Rovers especially outfitted for the rigors of the American Outback. We only use the long wheelbase version of the Range Rover, ensuring the comfort of the passengers who will sit in the rear seat. Many times clients have commented that riding in the rear seat is more comfortable than riding in the front. From self-recovery winches, additional lights, roofracks, tires and suspension to the built-in refrigeration units, everything about these Range Rovers has been taken care of to ensure our guests comfort and safety. Our drivers have been expertly trained in the unique driving style these vehicles demand when crossing uneven terrain. Additionally, Tawàyama Safaris has a custom-built equipment hauler ensuring that even the smallest luxuries can be brought with us into the field. Cooking will be done out of yet another custom-built piece, a chuck-wagon built out of the back-half of a Land Rover 110. Equipped with 2 freezer/refrigerator units, propane gas, a full compliment of chef quality cooking tools and custom built stoves, dutch ovens and grilles, guests will be eating in style and will not go hungry! Cooking will be done with excellence in mind, offering local cuisine as well as our own blend of outdoor favorites. Clients comment on how they eat better on the trail than at home. Tawàyama is a Hopi word meaning: "the Sun God rises from his house in the East". Safari is a Swahili word meaning: "journey, time, departure or trip". Our name is more than just a couple of words. It describes accurately what we do and when we do it. Tawàyama Safaris, is "An expedition or trip occuring when the Sun God rises from his house in the East". The pronunciation of Tawàyama has the accent on the second syllable (ta-WA-ya-ma). The logo, a double-spiral is taken from the petroglyphs and pictographs of the Southwestern United States. The meaning of the double-spiral is 'journeys without end' or 'journeys in transition'. It also represents the sun in several cultures. We feel it is very appropriate. Travelling to remote areas of the Western Hemisphere, you will visit places and see things that very few people have had the opportunity to do so. We will travel very far off the beaten path, the chances of not seeing anyone for days is a very likely possibility. Details and descriptions of the various safaris can be found by clicking the SAFARIS logo. The goal of an expedition with Tawàyama Safaris is to place people in unique situations to photograph when the light is at it's best. Photographers of all skill levels and experience will be rewarded amply. Led by photographers and designed by photographers, each safari is choreographed to allow plenty of time to explore and photograph. You won't be hurried off for a quick snapshot, all the while looking over your shoulder hoping to get back to the tour bus before it leaves. We wait for the light. Mornings are our favorite, but evenings are a very close second. Every aspect of an expedition with Tawàyama Safaris is taken care of for you. We have partnered up with one of the leading providers of mountaineering equipment and provide tents, sleeping bags, pads and every other camping necessity for our clients. Other than a few basic changes of clothes, a camera case packed wisely, and a good pair of shoes, a client with Tawàyama Safaris needn't worry about anything else. Tents and sleeping bags will be set up and laid out for you. Camp will be broken and gear stowed by our staff. To learn more about our vehicles and equipment click the GEAR icon.
