First Studio Assignment - BYU
Yesterday we had our first critique for the studio illustration class I'm teaching at BYU.
Their first two assignments were to photograph black objects on a black background, and white objects on a white background. Both assignments had two prints due, one showing lighting with no shadows, and one showing lighting with shadows.
We had two in-studio demos to show how to light the objects, did one demo with white and one with black. They had 2 weeks to complete their first two assignments.
Their photographs were wonderful. Some were simply stunning and I openly gushed about a few (possibly a little too much). Many of their images could go straight into a catalog or print ad. A few of them will undoubtedly keep them in their final portfolio for class, and hopefully will be put into their 'real world' portfolio.
Here are the in-class images we shot for the demos. I printed them large and hung them in the hall along with eight selections from students in the class. They're hung in the hall by the photo lab in the HFAC building (if you get a chance to see them).
Congrats to my students for a job well done!

mike slade..... um, you look different from the last time I saw you. better, somehow.
Yea...are you having some sort of identity crisis? Does Jessica know you stole her face and name???
By the way, I went to Rexburg to see your show today...simply stunning.
The spiral Jetty is a sweet image. The best one of the Jetty I've seen...and very different too. I dig your rover in the shot.
I have to say that every image is amazing. Some of Ross Park would be great.
Yeah, I was trying to jazz up my portrait after John was complaining that mine and Darren't weren't very good.
Identity crisis? Maybe so. It's been fun being Jessica for a day.
Thanks for the comments on the show. I appreciate it.
