First Studio Assignment - BYU

Yesterday we had our first critique for the studio illustration class I'm teaching at BYU.

Their first two assignments were to photograph black objects on a black background, and white objects on a white background. Both assignments had two prints due, one showing lighting with no shadows, and one showing lighting with shadows.

We had two in-studio demos to show how to light the objects, did one demo with white and one with black. They had 2 weeks to complete their first two assignments.

Their photographs were wonderful. Some were simply stunning and I openly gushed about a few (possibly a little too much). Many of their images could go straight into a catalog or print ad. A few of them will undoubtedly keep them in their final portfolio for class, and hopefully will be put into their 'real world' portfolio.

Here are the in-class images we shot for the demos. I printed them large and hung them in the hall along with eight selections from students in the class. They're hung in the hall by the photo lab in the HFAC building (if you get a chance to see them).

Congrats to my students for a job well done!
