Leica

Yesterday in my Photo 1 class we went over student's cameras and answered any questions they might have about their particular camera.

One of my students pulled out this little gem. It's a Leica II from around 1935-ish. I have been doing some research and can only find factory examples that were offered in either black or chrome.

The story behind this camera is that it was left behind by retreating German soldiers during WWII. My student says her grandfather purchased it from eBay for her.

There are some Leica replica fakes made in Russia from time to time, but I do not seem to find this particular model offered as a replica.

She wanted to know if she could use it for the class. I was unsure as to it's value, so I warned her that to have it damaged, lost or stolen would be a shame. I asked her to see if she could get another camera. If she can't, I may offer to run a roll of film through it for her to see if the shutter and aperature settings are good.
